People love to have pets with them because they can cheer them up instantly. Having a pet is fun, but it also is a huge responsibility. Before you get a pet, you must be sure that you can look after it well. People have all kinds of pets to give them company. You could get a dog, a cat, or even a bird. Birds do not give the impression that they are affectionate and intelligent, but they are, and they make excellent pets. Parrots and parakeets are a great choice if you are looking for a bird as a pet.

Having a Budgie as a Pet

Budgies belong to the parakeet family. They are tiny little birds but very lively and vocal. They chirp non-stop and keep you entertained all day. If you have just got yourself a budgie for the first time, you will need to know your budgie better and getting him to know you.

Before you attempt to train your budgie, you have to get acquainted with one another. It must learn to trust you.

A new budgie will feel uncomfortable in his new surroundings for a few days, so give him his space. Let him learn that he is in a safe place. Let him explore the area on his own and learn all about it. As soon as you find that he is comfortable, you can begin your training.

Getting Acquainted with Your Budgie

1. Name your budgie to make things more personal. Then talk to him calmly and sweetly every time you pass the cage.

2. Allow the budgie to fly around the room with the windows and doors closed. It will enjoy the space. Then, show it a perch and lead it back to its cage.

3. Get your budgie used to your hand. Place your hand in the budgie's cage, and keep it immobile. Slowly move it closer to the bird and hold your finger almost touching it. Please do this for a few days until the bird gets used to your hand. Then you can try to nudge it with your finger and urge the little budgie to jump on to it.

4. Teach your friend to get on and off your finger by giving him a treat when he gets it right.

5. Teach him to fly to you and rest on your shoulder by guiding him with your finger. Please give him a treat when he does it right. Also, teach him to fly back into his cage the same way and reward him when he succeeds.

6. Get your budgie used to a towel as that will be necessary at times when he is sick, and you need to give him his medication or take him to a vet. Place a towel in the cage and let him walk on it. Place treats on it. Then gently lift the towel and cup him in it.

7. Budgies can learn more than a thousand words in their lifetime. Repeat the words to the bird over and over again till the budgie learns them. Say the name to him repeatedly too.
